The Other is no longer only a threat of the loss of subjectivity, but also an inevitable condition of being. The contemporary post-Darwinian organism operates not through autonomy, but through dynamics of dependency. When we view ourselves as a constantly rewritten surface, the principles in which we find guarantees of self hood begin to function as temporary agreements. This is not a loss, rather a shift in state: individuality is no longer experienced as a unified whole. There is something sacred in this, yet contemporary icons do not represent, they observe. Addressing them is an attempt to briefly suspend movement, to name what is slipping away, and to acknowledge that the future is not necessarily stable or easily articulated.
E. Bernatonytė’s work is a speculative game of posthumanist discourses and social problems. By combining the traditions of the past, myths and behavioural patterns encountered in people’s everyday life, the artist creates alternative approaches to the perception of modernity. The main tools used in her work are sculpture, installation and video art.
