Since 2012, Malte Schumann, aka Caldera, has been producing and perfecting his own brand of percussive,
bass- and dub-tinged contemporary techno. His highly refined sound converges in the liminal space between
the synthetic and the organic; a delicate balance between two distinctly contrasting forces that generates an
immersive, psychedelic ecosystem of sound. Caldera’s interest in complex instrumentation, layered textures,
and experimental rhythmic frameworks gives a fresh edge and new depth to dance music. Alongside these
rhythmic explorations is his clear attention to detail and dedication to sculpting each individual sound.
In recent years, Caldera has released on labels including Berlin’s Nummer Music, Marseille’s Melifera Records,
London’s Space Lab and Well Street Records, Bristol-based Pressure Dome, and Chicago’s Kimochi Sound,
across multiple monikers including Loop LF.
Caldera’s approach to DJing echoes the same care and consideration as his productions. His sets connect
heads-down techno with left-of-centre percussive selections, and hypnotic slow-burn dub and club energy.
Between his detail oriented and narrative driven mentality his sets move fluidly between tempos, moods and
genres with ease. Whether behind the decks or in the studio, Caldera continues to refine his vision of
forward-thinking rhythm focused music making, building a cohesive world of sound that is unmistakably his
own.
